Everything You Need to Know About the OAE Assessments

It's January and many of you, including myself, will be graduating in a few months; congratulations by the way! Some have taken all of the OAE tests already, many of us have not. I'm here to fill you in on what to expect, when taking these tests. For starters, let me tell you some basic information. Here's the link to the OAE website. Each test is $105; if you fail, which hopefully, with my help, that does not happen, you have to pay another $105 to re-take it. The passing score for each test is 220. You can always reschedule your test, with no extra charge, as long as it's before the 24 hour mark before your original test time.
What To Expect:
Come in at least 30 minutes early. There will be people ahead of you in line; there will also be professionals helping those who are finishing up their tests.
Bring an ID: Either a driver's license or a Passport (In English).
You will be provided with a free locker for all of your belongings (you can't even wear a headband). One girl paid $10 for a locker down the hall before coming into the testing center; let's just say, she was not happy when they handed me a key.
They will take a picture of you to prove that it was you who took the test. (I belive that they take a fingerprint scan as well; don't hold me to that. I don't know why I can't remember if they do that or not).
You will be provided with earplugs or noise canceling headphones.
There will be individual cameras in the room, one for each computer, so don't try anything silly!
5 Tips to Consider
Drink an energy drink. I drank one before my 012 test and I was very focussed. (Definitely get the okay from your doctor before taking the energy drink).
Use the restroom before taking your test (Most tests will not allow you to leave in the middle of taking it).
Dress up! Dressing up may help you better feel prepared and help you create a higher expectation on your performance. When wearing sweats and a hoodie, most likely you're too comfortable and may feel more lazy than prepared.
If you can, go to a Pearson Testing Center. I went to one for my 012 test and it was well organized and a smooth process. I took my 013 at another place and it was chaos; there was one lady trying to do 50 things at once and it stressed me out and distracted me. I did not pass that test...by 4 points!
When taking practice tests, defineitely focus on the time. Each test gives you, roughly, 1 minute and 20 seconds per question. The 012 test was a breeze, I had about 20 minutes to go back and double check some answers, but for the 013, I ran out of time; I had to guess on about 15 questions.
For the following information, I will discuss mainly the tests that I have to take, only because those are the areas that I am familiar with. Also, I don't want to post about areas that I have no clue what I'm talkig about, so if you do have information on other sections, please feel free to post them below!
What's on these tests?
Now I can't be too specific on what they ask you on these tests but here is a generalization on what they ask:
I have not taken this test yet but this test focuses on: (1) Student Development and Learning (2) Assessment, Instruction, and the Learning Environment (Case Study), and (3) The Professional Environment (Work Product). I was told that this test asks you a little about each content area. So study these domains and brush up on your basic math, history, science, etc. and you should be fine!
This test focusses on: (1) Child Development and Learning, (2) Language and Literacy Development, (3) Learning Across the Curriculum, and (4) Professional Relationships and Responsibilities. This test did not focus on theorists as much as I thought it would (maybe that was just my version of the test). It asked questions about a safe environment for the children, ELL students, how to respond to children, and how to work with other teachers in your classroom, or school.
This test focuses on: (1) Understanding Young Children with Special Needs, (2) Promoting Young Children's Growth and Development, and (3) Working in a Collaborative Learning Community. This test definitely asked questions about the special education laws. There are lengthy paragraph for every 2 or 3 questions so PLEASE practice speed reading at home. On top of the legnthy paragraphs, about 90% of these tests answers were a combination of two or more answers, so it will say something like: A and B, B and C, A B and C, all of the above, none of the above, etc. It was rarely just: A, B, or C.
FINALLY: If you need accommodations, such as more time on your test, check out the Alternative Arrangements page. There you will select an assessment, then you will click, "Alternative Testing Arrangement Request Form", print it out, fill it out, and fax or mail it in. Good Luck!
